Burrowes Students Donate “Keys for the City”
On May 18 Music for Everyone representatives arrived at Burrowes Elementary, loaded up a beautiful student designed and painted piano and delivered it to the Lime Street side of the YWCA for the entire Lancaster Community to enjoy playing. This project, under the direction of art teacher Stephanie Mowery, began because of the generous donation of a piano by the school based therapist Peg Weik. The music teacher, Janet Rawleigh and all of the Burrowes student’s had a desire to say thank you to Music for Everyone in a big way. This seemed like the perfect time! Normally the “Keys for the City” pianos are themselves a fundraiser which benefits schools in SDOL. Through a conversation with director John Gerdy, Burrowes was allowed to use their own piano so students could thank MFE for giving SDOL approximately $600,000 worth of grants over the past 10 years. At Burrowes alone we have gone from having only 12 band instruments to over 60 in the past 5 years. We are privileged to have such a generous organization in our community who supports kids all over the city.
The students who painted the piano were Sorranika Bora, Davyanna Crespo, Xavier Gates, Ellashani Gomez-Miller, Juliana Grove, Cohen Sangrey, Darien Santos, Jaydel Valdes, Madysun Wilson, and Natasha Yefimov.
